Amdjarass — At the Edge of the Desert, a Spring of Hope

Amdjarass lies at the far reaches of Chad, where the Ennedi desert seems to stretch on forever. Here, water is rarer than gold. Traditional wells were drying up one by one. Young people left for the cities, leaving behind ghost villages. The elders watched their land die in silence.

Water4Chad took on the challenge. Drilling in Amdjarass meant going deep — very deep. The technical team persevered, meter after meter, through rocky, unforgiving soil. And when water burst forth from more than 80 meters below the surface, the cry of joy echoed off the sandstone cliffs.

Hassan, a young herder who was about to leave the region, changed his mind that day. “If the water stays, I stay,” he promised. He’s not the only one. Since the borehole was drilled, three families have returned. A small community garden now grows where there was only sand.

Amdjarass proves that even at the edge of the world, life can be reborn when given water.
