In Massakory, the health center’s maternity ward operated without running water. Midwives washed their hands in basins filled in the morning and prayed there would be enough left for the next delivery. Postpartum infections were common. Newborns fell ill in their very first hours of life.
When Water4Chad drilled a well right next to the health center, the medical staff knew everything was about to change. Mariam, a midwife for twenty years, turned on the tap and let the water run for a long time. “I wanted to make sure it was real,” she said, laughing.
Within a year, infections dropped dramatically. Mothers now come from neighboring villages to deliver in Massakory. The center was able to open an additional consultation room. Water gave this maternity ward what years of goodwill alone could not: hygiene, safety, trust.
Every birth in Massakory is now a little safer. Every mother leaves with her baby — healthy.
